Karekin Ter-Harutyunyan (‘ Njdeh’) was born in the village of Kznut in the province of Nakhichevan on January 1, 1886, in the family of the local priest, Yeghish, whose ancestors hailed from Salmast, a region in northern Iran that was also home to the great Armenian writer, Raffi.

On May 6, 1930, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Salmast. Dilman, the capital city of Salmast, was destroyed beyond repair. Therefore, a new city was built instead. The idea of Communism appealed to many people during the rise of the Soviet Union. During those tough economic times, most Salmastsi's were drawn to the idea of having free food and housing. As such, many people rallied in every corner of Salmast in favor of the Communist Party. Little did they know what Communism actually entailed.
